“The Blind Sheikh,” Omar Abdel-Rahman, the convicted mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing may, supposedly, soon be released from prison and sent back to Egypt. According to The Sacramento Bee, The Blind Sheikh’s release is a priority of the new Egyptian president, Morsi’s Muslim Brotherood party.
The news outlets reporting this accusation are the pointedly conservative ones: Fox News (“O eyes blind Sheikh’s release” ha ha very funny) The Blaze, The Sacramento Bee, The New York Post (which many people forget is owned by Rupert Murdoch and is generally always tilted right) and others.
The ‘talk’ of this release could actually be based on conversations between the Obama and Morsi administrations, as Morsi is reluctant to declare the US an ally when the US could really use an ally in the region. So perhaps the alleged quid pro quo talk in this instance is just that: the bouncing around of ideas and solutions that could potentially ease regional tensions.
For sure, though, the conversation sounded like this:
Release Abdel-Rahman and we will put a little more pressure on Iran and a little more pressure on Syria.
And the US responded: Well, we’ll think about it, but only if you stop reminding us about the 1978 Camp David Accords.
